Blog Post: FAQ Series #2…What Bible Study Resources Do You Recommend?

Another one of the most common requests we get from our followers is recommendations for the best study resources out there.  

Our first response is ALWAYS to pray and search the scriptures for yourself (prior to consulting commentaries or articles).  Hebrews 4:12 tells us, ‘The Word of God is living and active”.  In addition to the Holy Spirit, it is one of the most useful tools we have been given for growing in wisdom, knowledge, and discernment, as well as encouragement. 

Beyond the Bible, itself, there are several other excellent resources we can confidently recommend to enrich your study. Here are our Top 5 (Free!) Favorite Bible Study Online Resources: 

1. Blue Letter Bible (Blueletterbible.org) is one of our favorite study tools.  It offers the ability to search by passage and keywords.  Additionally, it has both a Hebrew and Greek lexicon, which can be extremely helpful when trying to understand the meaning/reason behind the use of a specific word in scripture. 

2. Bible Gateway (biblegateway.com) is a treasure trove of resources, providing access to over 100 versions of the Bible, in 50 languages, including audio versions.  This is an excellent place to compare versions of the same verse, side by side. Bible Gateway is also accessible as an app. 

3. YouVersion App is a great way to keep your Bible with you at all times.  It, too, gives you access to a wide variety of versions/translations, allowing you to download your favorites, so that you have them readily available, even if you’re in a location with no wifi or cell coverage. It also provides access to thousands of Bible reading plans (which you can choose to work through with friends for accountability, and even listen to your  Bible on your daily commute! It encourages you for maintaining daily reading streaks, and also has places to highlight and make notes (which can be set as private, public, or viewable by a specific audience)

4. Bible Study Tools (https://www.biblestudytools.com/)  is a wealth of resources, including online access to concordances like Nave’s Topical Bible and Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (among others).  The site does offer a plus version for paid subscribers, but the free version is packed with plenty of content. One word of caution: this site does contain a fair amount of pop-ups and ads, which do take away from the site’s overall accessibility/user friendliness

5. Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary & Thesaurus (https://www.merriam-webster.com/) As basic of tools as these two seem, they are extremely valuable in the event that you encounter an unfamiliar word or phrase, as well as for helping mine synonyms while dissecting scripture or conducting word studies.
